Coupang and Korea’s Logistics Automation Problem Reveal a Gender-Imbalanced Technological Transition

Amazon is already turning its logistics centers into robotics laboratories. Robots move product shelves, sort goods, assist with packaging, and even pick up items with increasingly advanced sensing technology. Logistics is no longer a simple warehouse business. It has become a massive industrial operating system powered by data, artificial intelligence, robotics, and automated infrastructure.

 

 

Now look at Coupang, Korea’s leading e-commerce company. Coupang was once called the “Amazon of Korea.” Rocket Delivery was presented as a symbol of technological innovation. To investors, the company emphasized data-driven logistics, AI-based demand forecasting, automated fulfillment, and future-oriented delivery infrastructure. Drone delivery, robotic logistics, and fully automated centers became part of Coupang’s glossy growth narrative.

 

 

But what consumers encounter at their doorsteps before dawn is not a robot. What keeps the logistics centers running through the night is not a robot either. Sorting, picking, packing, loading, unloading, and rushing from one task to the next are still mostly done by human workers.

 

 

This does not mean Coupang has done no automation at all. Some large logistics centers have introduced autonomous transport vehicles, sorting robots, unmanned forklifts, and automated packaging equipment. The company continues to emphasize investments in AI and robotics. The issue is scale and direction. Coupang has not been valued merely as a retailer. It has been valued as a technology-based logistics platform. That leads to a sharper question: is Coupang truly replacing labor with technology, or is it wrapping a labor-intensive model in the language of technology?

The larger problem is that this technological transition is unfolding in a gender-imbalanced way.

 

 

Recently, companies have been reducing entry-level and junior hiring by adopting chatbots, generative AI, and automation tools. Content writing, customer support, marketing assistance, sales support, research, document preparation, administrative work, and basic planning tasks are being directly affected by AI. These areas overlap with office, support, and communication roles where women have traditionally had a high rate of entry. Under the banner of “productivity improvement,” companies are reducing junior hiring and rapidly shrinking white-collar tasks that can be automated.

 

 

Meanwhile, field jobs with a higher share of male workers, such as warehouse handling, transportation, equipment operation, night logistics, delivery, and physically demanding on-site work, are not being replaced by robots at the same speed. There are technical difficulties, of course. But the result is clear: AI is pushing out junior and entry-level workers in offices first, while robotics has not sufficiently reduced physically demanding labor on the logistics floor.

This is not merely a difference in technological speed. It reflects power and cost calculations within the labor market. For companies, it is faster and cheaper to avoid hiring one junior office worker and replace parts of that role with AI tools. Marketing copy, customer response drafts, sales materials, market research, and report outlines can be automated almost immediately. By contrast, robotics in logistics centers requires large upfront investment, redesigning facility structures, operational stabilization, and safety standards. Companies therefore automate the easiest areas first. As a result, entry-level jobs often filled by women and young workers shrink first, while male-dominated field jobs remain heavily dependent on human bodies.

 

 

This structure is unfair to both sides. For junior office workers, the career ladder is disappearing. In the past, workers learned by handling basic tasks, accumulated experience within an organization, and eventually grew into managers or specialists. If AI eliminates entry-level work, new workers lose the first step of their career path. If roles with a high rate of female entry, such as marketing, sales support, content production, customer management, administration, and education operations, are reduced first, AI-driven transition may deepen gender imbalance in the labor market.

 

 

It is also unfair to field workers. Dangerous, repetitive, and physically demanding tasks that should be handled by robots are still being left to humans. Night sorting, moving heavy goods, fast picking, long hours of walking, and repetitive motions create industrial injuries and chronic fatigue. If a company that presents itself as a technology company cannot reduce the most exhausting forms of labor through technology, that is a failure of innovation.

 

 

Coupang’s Rocket Delivery symbolically exposes this problem. Its competitiveness was not built by technological innovation alone. It was created through compressed labor operations, a dense delivery network, high work intensity, and Korea’s highly concentrated urban structure. Tasks that robots should perform are still being done by people. Fatigue that algorithms should reduce is being absorbed by workers. Under the name of future logistics, present-day physical labor continues to be consumed.

 

 

The reason Korea is slow to automate is not simply a lack of technology. First, many logistics centers are not structurally optimized for automation. Automation works best when facilities are designed around machines from the beginning. Placing a few robots into an existing warehouse does not create a future logistics system. Second, from the company’s point of view, using human labor can appear cheaper in the short term. Third, drone delivery and autonomous delivery robots face regulatory, safety, and liability barriers in dense urban environments. Fourth, companies may have found it more profitable in the short term to manage labor more tightly rather than replace labor with technology.

 

 

But this model is not sustainable. A society where AI devours entry-level office jobs while robots fail to relieve physically demanding fieldwork is a distorted technological society. Junior cognitive work is automated, while repetitive work that damages backs, knees, and bodies is left to people. The office career ladder for women and young workers is cut away, while male-dominated physical labor remains exposed to danger and fatigue. This is not efficiency. It is distortion.

 

 

If Coupang is truly a technology company, it must now prove not only delivery speed, but the quality of its automation. It should disclose the share of logistics processes handled by robots, the extent to which automation has reduced labor intensity, the impact on industrial accident rates, changes in dependence on night-shift labor, total robotics investment, and actual deployment figures. Statements such as “we use AI” or “we have introduced robots” are no longer enough.

 

 

The government also bears responsibility. Korea calls itself a manufacturing robotics powerhouse, yet it remains slow in service logistics automation. It must move faster on robot delivery trials, urban autonomous delivery systems, logistics automation standards, industrial safety rules, support for automation among smaller logistics firms, and retraining programs. At the same time, policy responses are needed for junior office jobs being reduced by AI. Simply telling young workers to “learn AI” is not enough. Korea needs new job designs that allow entry-level workers to gain experience, AI-assisted junior roles, career transition training, and gender-impact assessments of technological change.

Technological transition is not neutral. Which jobs are automated first, and which forms of labor remain assigned to human bodies, are choices made by companies and society. Replacing junior office workers with AI while leaving physically demanding logistics labor to humans is not a fair future.

 

 

Coupang’s Rocket Delivery changed Korean consumer life. That achievement should be acknowledged. But the question must now change. Is the real engine of Rocket Delivery technology, or the human night shift? And in the age of AI, whose jobs are being erased first, and whose exhausting labor is being left untouched?

 

 

While Amazon pushes robots into the heart of logistics, if Korea’s logistics innovation still stands on human backs and knees, that is not innovation. It is delay. If that delay reinforces a gender-imbalanced structure where office jobs for women and young workers shrink while physically demanding field labor remains intact, then this is not merely an industrial issue. It is a social problem.

 

 

A rocket cannot be launched from a human back. If Coupang wants to be a real technology company, it must change the engine.
